Research Center of Manufacturing Technology

Corporate presentation

The Research Center of Manufacturing Technology was established in 2000 as an institute of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME), Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU). The Department of Production Machines and Equipment (RCMT) at CTU, FME continues the mission of the Research Centre of Manufacturing Technology and is currently the biggest institute in the faculty.

RCMT is a highly professional and well-equipped institute acting as an educational and training facility and a research base for the Czech machine tool industry. Research and technical support for the industry are in the foreground of RCMT activities. RCMT team comprises approximately 70 professionals specialized in design, engineering analyses, and research. The team members solve a variety of research and engineering topics in the frame of intensive cooperation with Czech machine tool producers and users and with international research and industrial partners as well. RCMT represents the Czech Republic in technical fields in CECIMO, the European Association of the Machine Tool Industry, and is also a corporate member of the Academy of Production Engineering CIRP.

The research program of RCMT is divided into three main fields:

  • Research of design and properties of productive, reliable, and precise machine tools
  • Research of automation and robotic applications in manufacturing processes
  • Research in productive manufacturing processes

Role in the Project

CTU in Prague/RCMT focuses long-term research on the development of solutions in machine tool design and advanced manufacturing. RCMT has extensive experience in digital twins, machine tool virtual models, virtual machining process simulations, process dynamics, machine tool CNC and feed drive control, and strategies of advanced tool path planning.

RCMT contributes by employing those competencies in the LaserWay project mainly in developing a prototype for laser blanking applications and a prototype for EHLA applications. In the prototype for laser blanking applications, one of the main challenges is machine tool high dynamics and dynamic control. RCMT contributes to these goals in collaboration with IDEKO, Fagor Automation, and ModuleWorks by developing the models of controlled structures dynamics using the strategies to quickly obtain a representative description of machine behavior by measurement and identification. We research also the strategies of offline programming optimization based on linear programming and feed-rate planning with FIR low-pass filtering of the input geometry.

In the EHLA topic, RCMT collaborates with Fraunhofer ILT and ACunity on the development of the EHLA machine concept, mechanical design, structural FE and optimization analysis, and application of CFRP materials in machine tool structure. The specific part is the machine tool digital twin developed by RCMT, which allows for advanced simulation of positioning dynamics and accuracy including the variable machine tool properties. To achieve EHLA machine tool high dynamics, RCMT addresses the advanced CNC and feed drive control techniques.
